U18 Move To 3-1 With A Win Against QE
Always a well drilled and well coached team the game against QE, the 2nd of the weekend would show that there are no easy games in U18 Northern Premier this season. With changes to the lineup from the game the night before this game would see returner O'Daniel Creary would make his first start of the season as would Devon Williams.
These 2 would open the scoring for Elite with a nice finish inside from Devon and an And-1 from O'Daniel. For most of the quarter the teams would cancel each other out but Elite finished the strongest with 5 points from former QE player Luke Baldwin and a 3 from Alex Munier in the last few seconds would finish the quarter 21-15 in Elite's favour.
It was clear that QE were not going to go down easily and came out in the 2nd quarter hot from behind the arc connecting on 6 3 point attempts, making 14 in total from the game. It was this sharp shooting that mean Sheffield were reliant on an even spread of scoring across the team with Addison Meredith and Amir Khan chipping in with some important points. The half time score was tied at 41-41.
The second half started in the same way the first ended with QE coming out making another 5 3's and winning the quarter 18-10. Vermon Mabou and Miklos Zalavari would combine for 6 points to make sure Elite stayed in contention but would be going into the final quarter down 6, 53-59.
Defensive instructions were emphasised by Head Coach, Aidan Appleyard, and it was clear Elite were keen to halt the run of scoring from behind the arc by QE and limited them to just 11 points in the 4th quarter, scoring 25 of their own. Big man Kelvin Talbot played a key roll in this coming up with 4 block and 7 in the game.
Elite would finish this one on the high side coming away with a 73-70 victory and go into the Nottingham game with a 3-1 record and clear signs of the team they have the potential to be.
Miklos Zalavari stuffed the stats sheet on his 18th birthday with double-double 20 points and 15 rebounds, along with 8 assists. Luke Baldwin contributed 12 points, with 2 3's down the stretch the see off his former team. Kelvin Talbot also finished with a double-double 11 points, 12 rebounds and an impressive 7 blocks.
