Last seasons match up was a thriller between Sheffield Elite and City of Edinburgh and this was was sure to live up to the same hype. Sheffield Elite were without starting guard Miklos Zalavari through injury so this provided a great opportunity for someone to step up.
The game started at fast pace with the Scots struggling to deal with the size and physicality of Vermon Mabou who scored 8 of the first 10 points for Sheffield Elite around the basket. The teams were evenly matched the 1st period with the score standing at 18-14 in Elites favour.
Edinburgh continued to struggle with Vermon who started the 2nd quarter with 6 points with newcomer Devon Williams and returner O'Daniel Creary also chipping in. New signing Kelvin Talbot was also a problem for the Edinburgh side with some athletic finishes and an emphatic dunk on the break. Defence was the issue for Elite in this quarter, losing the quarter by 2 and going into half time up 2 at 44-42.
Kelvin continued to dominate on the glass and around the rim with 7 points in the 3rd quarter on his way to 14 for the half and 23 points for the game. Fellow new signings George Andrews and Addison Meredith made some important buckets at crucial times and Harry Butler kept his cool from the line making 2 free throws. Elite won this quarter by 7 stretching the lead out to 61-52 at the end of the 3rd.
The final quarter was very evenly matched with both teams trading baskets and Sheffield capitalising on opportunities from the free throw line and closing out the game with 79-72 win.
Kelvin Talbot lead the scoring for Elite with 23 points and 22 rebounds, Vermon Mabou had 16 points and George Andrews finished with 11 points and 6 assists
