Elite Run Out Of Magic For This Years Cup
Elite Run Out Of Magic For This Years Cup
Following a convincing win against Nottingham Wildcats the night before, Elite were reading to go in the Sweet Sixteen of the National Cup. This round would put them up against regular powerhouse Manchester Magic.
Elite started the game with Miklos Zalavari, TJ Prado, George Andrews, Kelvin Talbot and Luke Baldwin but Magic would start the brighter of the 2 teams. Making shots from both inside and behind the arc Manchester took an early 14 point lead. Miklos began to settle into the game and control the team getting points on the board for Sheffield and making sure the score didn't get away from them early. A blow to the face for TJ Prado and a bloody nose, led to a lengthy delay and time for Head Coach, Aidan Appleyard, to speak with the team. Captain Emanuel Kai checked into the game with O'Daniel Creary and Dylan McCormack who helped steady the ship and get Elite back into the game, ending the first quarter down 2, 18-16.
Alex Munier came into the fold and Sheffield Elite would continue to work on wearing down Manchester. O'Daniel Creary made 5 straight points, Miklos continued to be a handful and Luke Baldwin made a 3 to end the quarter. Sheffield matched Manchester in this quarter and went into half time down 2, 42-40.
Knowing that Magic would be coming out stronger in the 2nd half, as they usually do, Coach Appleyard and Coach Morey made sure the Elite side were well prepared for this. It was clear that their side had taken note of this and came out strong in the 3rd quarter themselves. Scores from Kelvin Talbot and George Andrews, coupled with great defence, meant Elite had cut the 2 defecit and won the quarter 19-17, going into the last 10 mins level at 57.
The 4th quarter started well for Elite with Vermon Mabou putting points on the board first and giving Elite a lead, which would go backwards and forwards between the 2 teams for the whole quarter. As the quarter wore on, Sheffield began to show clear signs of fatigue, having played the day before, and Magic began to captilise on this stretching the lead out to 5 points. A timeout was called for Elite, a play drawn up to get an open look and then implement their defensive strategy. Unfortunately, the shot didn't fall and a foul with 6 secs on the clock meant Magic would move on to the quarter final with an 83-76 win.
Miklos Zalavari would lead Sheffield with 20 points, Vermon Mabou had 15 points and George Andrews 11 points.
